Successfully Completing a PhD: A Journey of Resilience, Dedication, and Passion

On December 24, 2024, an article was published highlighting the journey of a PhD candidate whose work combined engineering and stem cell research. The successful completion of her PhD at IMU University illustrates not only academic achievement but also reflects characteristics of resilience and dedication.

Early Career

The candidate began her career as a research scientist in genetic engineering with CryoCord Sdn Bhd in 2017. Recognizing that a PhD would enhance her career prospects within the scientific community, she pursued opportunities to further her education. A pivotal moment occurred when she met her academic supervisor, Prof. Leong Chee Onn, at an event aimed at fostering industrial-academic collaborations. This encounter facilitated her enrollment in an Industrial PhD program.

Industrial PhD Program

The Industrial PhD program merges academic research with practical industrial applications. This unique framework enabled the candidate to address real-world challenges faced by her company while receiving a robust academic education and engaging in innovative research.

Research Focus

Her dissertation focused on developing a cell-based gene therapy to combat ocular neovascularization. The research involved utilizing umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells to deliver an anti-angiogenic gene, potentially offering a new alternative to existing treatment methods. Preliminary findings suggested that genetically modified stem cells could replicate the anti-angiogenic effects of standard treatments while providing enhanced safety and ease of use.

Impact of Findings

These findings may open new avenues for patients with neovascularization, allowing for biological healing that reduces the need for frequent drug injections. Additionally, the candidate has filed a patent for her research and is in the process of publishing further original articles based on her academic work.

Challenges and Support

Although balancing work and PhD commitments posed significant challenges, the candidate benefited from comprehensive support systems at both her workplace and university. Completing the program marked a critical advancement in her career, enabling her to pursue new managerial roles in research.

Future Aspirations

As a graduate of the Industrial PhD program in Medical and Health Sciences, she now possesses the credentials and applied experience necessary for a successful career in academia or industry. Her journey highlights the significance of resilience and dedication in navigating challenges, transforming obstacles into opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Reflections on the Journey

In her reflections on the experience, she emphasized the value of pursuing one’s passions and noted how the journey has strengthened her commitment to her work.
