UTM Wins National Instruments Autonomous Robot Competition for 2024

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has been awarded the Champion title at the National Instruments Autonomous Robot Competition (NI ARC) for the fourth consecutive year. This achievement underscores the commitment and efforts of UTM’s teams and their mentors, particularly Dr. Mohd Saiful Azimi and the Airost team, who have demonstrated significant innovation and teamwork in the field of autonomous robotics.

Quarterfinals Recognition

In addition to the Airost team, Dr. Fauzan Khairi Che Harun and the Sigma team advanced to the quarterfinals, receiving a consolation prize for their performance. Although the Sigma team did not progress to the finals, their perseverance and skill were noted as commendable contributions to the competition.

Team Composition

The Airost team consisted of undergraduate engineering students, including Chen Pyng Haw (Data), Chan Si Yuan (Biomedical), Ng Ru Yik (Electronics), and Yap En Thong (Software). The Sigma team included Kong Zhen Ting (Electronics), Ooi Jing Ying (Electrical), Gabriel Ding Buo Khang (Electrical), and Tan Wei Li (Biomedical).

Support for Innovation

Recognition was given to the UTM Centre for Student Innovation & Technology Entrepreneurship (UTMXCITE) and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIRO) for providing essential facilities that support student creativity and innovation in robot construction. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) also played a role by sponsoring transportation and accommodation for the participants.

Conclusion

This accomplishment reflects UTM’s dedication to nurturing talent in robotics and providing a platform for students to demonstrate their skills. The successes of both the Airost and Sigma teams highlight the university’s commitment to advancing technological innovation in robotics, which may serve as an inspiration to other educational institutions pursuing excellence in autonomous systems.
