FISIP UNAIR Strengthens Strategic Partnership with Hokkaido University for Academic Collaboration
On December 4, 2024, a delegation from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) arrived at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, Japan. The members of this delegation, including Irfan Wahyudi and Agastya Wardhana, visited Hokkaido University to advance academic collaboration.
Initiation of the Visit
The visit was initiated following an invitation extended by Professor Hyunjoo Naomi Chi from the Graduate School of Public Policy, who has expertise in migration, gender, and social inclusion. Professor Chi has been associated with FISIP UNAIR since 2018, when she participated in an international seminar organized by the Department of International Relations. Over the years, this partnership has included various academic initiatives, such as Professor Chi’s visit to Surabaya in 2022 and her involvement in ICAS 2024.
Exploring Collaboration Opportunities
During the recent discussions, opportunities for collaboration were explored, including student internship programs, joint research activities, and advanced study opportunities for early-career faculty members. Additionally, Professor Norihiro Naganawa, the Director of the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, participated in the discussions.
Strategic Roles in Response to Global Issues
The meeting occurred in winter temperatures that fell to minus five degrees Celsius, focusing on the strategic roles of Japan and Indonesia in response to the Ukraine-Russia crisis. Both institutions agreed to work on a preliminary framework for a new cooperation agreement, which emphasizes academic exchanges and student partnerships to enhance international relations.
Significance of Sustainable Academic Networks
This visit underscored the importance of developing inclusive and sustainable academic networks. The FISIP UNAIR delegation emphasized that meaningful collaborations extend beyond formal agreements and highlighted the necessity of fostering mutual respect and understanding within academic partnerships.
