The 2025 “Nanying Cup” International Chinese Debate Tournament was held at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) on November 30, 2025, with Renmin University of China achieving championship status.

The tournament, themed “Economic and Environmental Sustainability,” featured 48 university debate teams from various countries, including renowned institutions such as Zhejiang University, the University of Hong Kong, University College London, the University of Sydney, and the University of Malaya. This event served as a platform for cultural exchange and intellectual dialogue.
Final Debate Highlights
In the final debate, Renmin University faced off against Hunan University on the topic “Does paying for emotional value empower happiness or drain the soul?” Both teams delivered well-structured arguments, culminating in Renmin University’s victory.
10th Anniversary of the Nanying Cup
This iteration of the “Nanying Cup” commemorated its tenth anniversary. Established in 2016, the tournament has transitioned from a campus-level event to an internationally recognized competition for Chinese-language debate, now included in the World Chinese Debating Ranking System. It is regarded as one of the top eight Chinese-language debate tournaments globally, promoting youth engagement between China and Malaysia.
Opening Ceremony Remarks
During the opening ceremony, Professor Wang Huiqiong, Assistant President of XMUM, remarked on the significant evolution of the tournament over the past decade. She stated that the “Nanying Cup” has transformed into one of the most influential Chinese debate competitions worldwide.
Philosophical and Cultural Emphasis
The tournament emphasized philosophical inquiry, cross-cultural perspectives, and original thought, reflecting a commitment to exploring various dimensions of humanity, culture, and society. A notable aspect of the “Nanying Cup” is its encouragement of multinational team collaborations. This year, the competition included joint teams such as the Tongji University-University of Toronto United Team, with the XMUM Debate Team also featuring members from both China and Malaysia, highlighting the diversity of the event.
Comments on Impact and Relationships
Ma Meng, Chairperson of the Chinese Famous Debaters Alliance and Chief Advisor to the competition, commented on the event’s far-reaching impact. He noted that many teams from mainland China gained deeper insights into Malaysian culture and traditions through their participation. Ma emphasized that the tournament continues to improve annually, paralleling the growing friendship between China and Malaysia.
