NTU Vice President (Industry) Receives Prestigious International Award for Battery Research

NTU Singapore’s Distinguished University Professor and Vice President (Industry), Shirley Meng, has been awarded the prestigious International Society for Solid State Ionics (ISSI) Mid-Career Researcher Award, recognising her outstanding contributions to solid-state ionics and next-generation energy technologies. Presented once every two years, the award honours exceptional leadership and innovation in the field. Prof Meng received the accolade on 8 July during the SSI-25 conference in Singapore, sharing the recognition with Prof Naoaki Yabuuchi of Yokohama National University.

Solid-state ionics underpins advances in next-generation batteries, water purification technologies, memory storage, and healthcare applications. Prof Meng’s research focuses on developing sustainable battery materials, including sodium- and sulphur-based alternatives that are more abundant, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly than conventional lithium-based materials. Her work supports the global transition to cleaner energy while addressing growing demand for high-performance energy storage.

Beyond her research, Prof Meng plays a key leadership role at NTU by strengthening collaborations with leading international universities, research institutes, and industry partners. She also serves as co-director of the University of Chicago’s Energy Transition Network, promoting partnerships that accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into practical technologies. Through her research and industry engagement, Prof Meng continues to advance sustainable innovation and contribute to global efforts in tackling future energy challenges.
