Ateneo Graduate Earns Multiple Research Distinctions at Philippine Medical Association Convention

Research continues to open new pathways for young physician-scientists, as Dr Manuel Mendoza Jr, an alumnus of the Ateneo de Manila University and the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health, earned multiple distinctions at the 119th Philippine Medical Association Annual Convention through the 32nd PMA Residents’ Research Presentation.

Dr Mendoza secured 2nd Place in the Original Research Category for his study on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in patients with Hansen’s disease and its association with lepra reactions. He also placed 3rd in the Case Report Category for a rare case of nephrocutaneous tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patient, both projects conducted with fellow clinicians and researchers.

These latest recognitions add to his growing list of academic achievements, including previous awards at PMA 2025 and the Philippine Dermatological Society Annual Convention. His research excellence has also been recognized internationally through the Global Education Award from the International Society of Dermatology and a lecture invitation at the ISD International Congress in Rome.

Beyond clinical research, Dr Mendoza’s work in public health and medico-legal studies has gained attention for its policy relevance. Now a dermatology resident at Region 1 Medical Center, he continues to integrate clinical practice with research.

He describes research as a way to “tell patients’ stories,” reflecting his commitment to advancing both science and community health.
