Sri Lanka Prime Minister Dr. Harini Nireka Amarasuriya’s Visit to IIT Delhi: Strengthening Research and Education Collaboration

On October 17, 2025, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Nireka Amarasuriya of Sri Lanka visited the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral collaboration in research, innovation, and higher education.

Meeting with Faculty Members

During the visit, Dr. Amarasuriya met with faculty members, including Professor Arvind Nema, Deputy Director (Operations) at IIT Delhi, and Professor Anil Verma, Dean of International Programs. The discussions included interactions with international students and representatives from various startups.

Showcasing Innovative Startups

Among the startups presented was CYRAN AI, which introduced its BUDDHI AI DIY kit designed for hands-on learning in artificial intelligence through a STEM education framework. Another startup, Cluix, showcased a portable water quality analyzer. The Prime Minister was also introduced to various innovative technologies being developed at IIT Delhi’s Research and Innovation Park.

Potential for Academic Collaboration

Dr. Amarasuriya acknowledged the esteemed reputation of IIT Delhi and highlighted the potential for academic collaboration between Sri Lankan institutions and IIT Delhi. She mentioned ongoing collaborations with IIT Madras and expressed interest in extending these efforts to include IIT Delhi.

Strengthening Ties and Scholarships

Professor Nema emphasized IIT Delhi’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Sri Lankan educational institutions and noted that several Sri Lankan students are currently enrolled at the Institute. He proposed the establishment of dedicated scholarships funded by the Sri Lankan government to enhance capacity-building initiatives for students aiming to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees at IIT Delhi and its international campus in Abu Dhabi.

Creation of a Sri Lanka Academic and Research Hub

Additionally, Professor Verma discussed IIT Delhi’s international initiatives, proposing the creation of a “Sri Lanka Academic and Research Hub” at the Institute. This hub would focus on enhancing academic and research cooperation, connecting higher education institutions in both countries, and building institutional capacities. He also shared information about IIT Delhi’s advanced research infrastructure and its achievements in global rankings.
