WUACD: UNAIR’s Role as a Gateway for Global Community Development

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is involved in international community development initiatives through the World University Association for Community Development (WUACD). This organization facilitates collaboration between UNAIR and universities around the globe to enhance efforts in community empowerment.

Establishment of WUACD

WUACD was established in 2018 by 17 universities from various nations, including Pukyong National University in South Korea, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Griffith University in Australia. The association aims to improve the quality and reach of community service worldwide and seeks to position itself as a leading force in applying science, technology, and the humanities to social development. Its mission encompasses translating academic expertise into impactful community development initiatives on both local and international levels and fostering partnerships for sustainable social progress.

Programs Offered by WUACD

The organization provides several programs designed for UNAIR’s academic community. One notable initiative is the International Learning with Community (BBK) Program, which enables students to participate in community service projects in countries such as Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia. This program not only enhances cultural experiences for participants but also has academic benefits by aligning with the Community Service Program (KKN BBK) and offering course credits.

International Student Mobility Program

Additionally, WUACD creates community service opportunities for international students in Indonesia through the International Student Mobility Program. A significant partnership has developed between Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UTM) and UNAIR’s Faculty of Health Sciences, Medicine, and Natural Sciences (FIKKIA), culminating in a community development initiative in Banyuwangi in 2024. In this project, UTM students gained practical experience in local traditional herbal medicine and coffee production while also contributing to marine conservation efforts, including coral reef restoration and the protection of blacktip reef sharks. This initiative fosters cultural exchange and environmental awareness among participating students.

Conclusion

This summary illustrates UNAIR’s dedication to global community development and its collaboration with international universities to facilitate positive social impacts.
