iHumEnTech 2024: Innovations in Human-Centered Technology Conference Highlights

The International Human-Centered Technology Conference 2024 (iHumEnTech 2024) was held at the Impiana Hotel in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Organized by the Institute of Human-Centered Engineering (iHumEn) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the event attracted researchers, clinicians, academics, and students from across the globe, providing a platform for the exchange of innovative research at the intersection of humanity and technology.

Co-Organization and Support

The conference was co-organized with the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Engineering at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) in Taiwan and received support from the IJN-UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Centre. Additional contributions came from various organizations, including the Media and Game Innovation Centre of Excellence (MaGICX), the Sports Innovation & Technology Centre (SITC), and the Medical Devices and Technology Centre (MEDiTEC). Collaborations with the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and the International Symposium on Engineering and Technology 2024 (ISET 2024) enhanced the conference’s international scope.

Opening Remarks

The event opened with remarks from UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Ir. Ts Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, who highlighted the university’s commitment to creating impactful partnerships and the necessity of integrating technology with humanitarian perspectives to address global challenges.

Participation and Research Submissions

Participants from 32 institutions across 14 countries, including Malaysia, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, engaged in discussions on topics such as assistive technology and bio-instrumentation. A total of 107 research articles were submitted, with 77 chosen for publication in the Scopus-indexed IFMBE Proceedings under the theme “Emerging Science & Technology for Human Well-Being.” Poster presentations showcased advancements in biomedical detection.

Keynote Addresses

Keynote addresses featured Adjunct Prof. Dato’ Dr. Suhaini Kadiman from Malaysia’s National Heart Institute, who spoke on the impact of Real-World Data (RWD) in healthcare, and Prof. Dr. Gou-Jen Wang from NCHU, who presented innovations in biosensing applications utilizing a novel Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) platform.

Second Day Presentations

On the second day, presentations included those from Prof. Dr. Jia-Jin J. Chen of National Cheng Kung University and Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad ‘Athif Mohd Faudzi from UTM, focusing on digital therapeutics for brain neuromodulation and teleoperation robotics in healthcare.

Memorandums and Agreements

The conference also featured the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Datalytica Sdn. Bhd. and Simpnify Sdn. Bhd., along with a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with NCHU and a Research Contract Agreement (RCA) with IJN Sdn. Bhd. This signing ceremony, conducted during the Conference Gala Dinner, recognized the contributions of prominent speakers, sponsors, and participants.

Awards Ceremony and Conclusion

The event concluded with an awards ceremony honoring the Best Paper and Poster presentations. iHumEnTech 2024 underscored its role in promoting transformative research while emphasizing the significance of sustainable, human-centered solutions. UTM and its partners were acknowledged for their commitment to facilitating this influential event, further advancing international collaborations in medical and healthcare technology.
