Global Health Leaders Explore a New Vision for Sustainable Development Beyond 2030

UNU Global Health, together with Malaysia’s Ministry of Health, UCSI University, MIGHT Malaysia and Keio University Global Research Institute, convened a panel discussion in Kuala Lumpur to examine how sustainable development can evolve beyond 2030.

Held as part of UNU Global Health’s 20th anniversary celebrations, the discussion brought together policymakers, academics, international organizations, civil society representatives and regional stakeholders. The session explored how public health and well-being could become central to future development frameworks in Southeast Asia.

Speakers highlighted the strong connections between health and wider development challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, food systems, gender, decent work and governance. Participants also reflected on progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals and the need for Malaysia and ASEAN countries to accelerate action while moving away from fragmented approaches.

Looking beyond 2030, the panel emphasized the importance of placing people and planetary well-being at the heart of development. Discussions called for stronger measures of societal progress, systems-based approaches and greater focus on equity and interconnected challenges.

The speakers also highlighted the role of governments, public health institutions, universities and research organizations in generating evidence, strengthening partnerships and developing the skills needed for a resilient and inclusive future.

The dialogue underscored the importance of collaboration and integrated policymaking in shaping a sustainable post-2030 development agenda.
