KazNU Hosts National AI Hackathon to Tackle Financial Crime

The two-day national competition, AFM AI Hackathon 2026: Technologies Against Financial Crimes, has commenced at the Farabi Hub Center of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU). Jointly organized by the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Financial Monitoring (AFM) and KazNU, the event aims to harness artificial intelligence and digital innovation to combat economic and financial crimes.

More than 350 participants from across Kazakhstan, including IT specialists, data analysts, software developers, AI experts, and university students, have gathered to develop practical solutions for strengthening financial and economic security. The hackathon supports the country’s “Law and Order” initiative by encouraging the use of advanced technologies in public service and crime prevention.

Opening the event, AFM Chief of Staff Amir Sagyndykov and KazNU Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Margulan Ibraimov highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence, big data, and digital transformation in addressing modern security challenges. Participants are competing in three focus areas: darknet monitoring and OSINT collection, AI-powered cybersecurity solutions, and automated detection of illegal gambling and financial pyramid schemes on social media.

Throughout the competition, teams receive guidance from industry experts and AFM specialists. The most promising projects will receive government support for further development and practical implementation in Kazakhstan’s efforts to combat financial crime.
