Birzeit University Honors Media Excellence Through Fourth Shireen Abu Akleh Award

Birzeit University has announced the winners of the fourth Shireen Abu Akleh Award for Media Excellence, an annual recognition established to preserve the legacy of the renowned Palestinian journalist and encourage outstanding work in journalism and media storytelling.

The award celebrates media contributions that document Palestinian experiences, strengthen public awareness, and promote professional standards in reporting. Birzeit University President Dr. Talal Shahwan highlighted the importance of the award as a tribute to Shireen Abu Akleh’s commitment to truth, ethical journalism, and the development of future generations of media professionals.

Director of Al Jazeera’s Palestine Bureau Walid Al-Omari also praised Abu Akleh’s lasting influence, describing her as a symbol of professional integrity and dedication to journalism.

The 2026 award was shared by two outstanding media projects. Journalist Bidaa Othman from Palestine TV received recognition for a report documenting the resilience of Palestinian farmers in Gaza City’s Sheikh Ajleen area and their continued connection to their land despite wartime challenges. The second winning report, “Shanta Sham,” by journalists Hala Al-Zuhairi and Khawla Dar Saleem, highlighted the “Balad School” initiative by Birzeit University’s Center for Continuing Education supporting communities affected by ongoing challenges.

In addition, media student Rand Hannaisha received the Shireen Abu Akleh Encouragement Award for emerging talent.

Through the award, Birzeit University continues to support journalism, creativity, and the preservation of Palestinian narratives.
