UGM Strengthens Global Climate Research Through Contribution to IPCC Report on Carbon Mitigation

UGM Lecturer Contributes to IPCC Global Methodology Report on Carbon Removal, Biochar Innovation, and Climate Change Mitigation Strategies

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) lecturer Dr. Hanifrahmawan Sudibyo from the Faculty of Engineering has been appointed as a Lead Author for a major Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) international methodology report focused on carbon dioxide removal technologies, carbon capture, utilization and storage, and greenhouse gas inventory guidelines. His involvement reflects Indonesia’s growing contribution to global climate mitigation research and the development of scientific methodologies relevant to tropical ecosystems and agricultural landscapes. The report preparation process began during the first Lead Author Meeting in Rome, Italy, where international experts discussed methodological frameworks and scientific priorities for future climate reporting standards. Dr. Hanifrahmawan’s contribution particularly focuses on biochar applications in mineral soils, peatlands, and agricultural systems, including research into carbon storage, soil dynamics, and greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and nitrous oxide. The initiative aims to strengthen evidence-based climate strategies while improving methodologies for long-term carbon accounting. His participation also highlights the important role of Southeast Asian expertise in shaping global environmental policy, sustainable land management, and climate resilience efforts.
