Nina Lam Siu-ngan Awarded 2026 American Association of Geographers Lifetime Achievement Honor

Professor Nina Lam Siu-ngan of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has been awarded the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Association of Geographers (AAG). This honor acknowledges her significant contributions to the field of geography and her influential research, which has had a considerable impact on society.

Acknowledgment of Collaborative Efforts

In response to the award, Professor Lam noted her appreciation for the recognition, emphasizing that it acknowledges not only her more than four decades of teaching and research but also the collaborative efforts of her research teams over the years. She reiterated her dedication to advancing Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and her aim to leverage research outcomes to tackle global issues such as climate change and disaster management, thereby promoting sustainable societal development.

Educational Background and Academic Career

Recognized as a leading expert in GIScience, remote sensing, environmental health, and disaster resilience, Professor Lam completed her Bachelor’s degree in Geography at CUHK. She continued her education with master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. Subsequently, she held a professorship at Louisiana State University (LSU), where she became the E. L. Abraham Distinguished Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences in 2013. Her innovative research has established foundational principles that underpin the current evolution of GIScience, particularly in areas such as spatial analysis, scale, and fractal analysis.

Research Contributions and Innovations

Professor Lam’s research also emphasizes practical applications aimed at improving environmental health, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. A notable contribution includes the Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) model, which utilizes GIScience to evaluate risks from natural disasters, measure damage, and assess community recovery. The model aids researchers and policymakers in assessing a community’s capacity to withstand and recover from disasters, enhancing disaster prevention and emergency responses worldwide.

Leadership in Academic Public Service

In addition to her research contributions, Professor Lam has been involved in significant academic public service roles. She has served as the Geography and Regional Science Programme Director at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and as President of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS). Furthermore, she has actively promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic settings, leaving a meaningful impact on the academic community.
