UGM KKN Students Aid Disaster Recovery for Survivors in Aceh – Universitas Gadjah Mada

On February 1, 2026, the KKN-PPM Disaster Response team from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) received an official welcome from officials of the Pidie Jaya Regency Government and local community leaders at the Media Center Command Post in Pidie Jaya Regency. The delegation included Dr. Arie Sujito, Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni.
Local Expectations and Challenges
During the introductory meeting, local leaders articulated their expectations that UGM students would significantly aid residents of Aceh who have been affected by recent disasters. Particular emphasis was placed on the challenges faced by farmers who have lost their livelihoods due to the burial of rice fields under soil, rocks, and debris.
Support from Regional Officials
Saiful, Assistant for General Administration of the Regional Secretariat of Pidie Jaya Regency, acknowledged the potential positive contributions of the UGM KKN students in supporting recovery efforts in the region. He expressed appreciation for their presence, highlighting the hope that it would help the community in its rebuilding endeavors.
Impact of the Disaster
As of the latest reports, damage in Pidie Jaya Regency surpasses 17,000 units, affecting residential homes, agricultural land, and public infrastructure. This damage has resulted in economic stagnation and job losses, raising concerns about increased poverty levels among residents.
Community Leaders’ Perspectives
Kamarudin Andalah, a local leader and UGM alumnus, expressed gratitude for UGM’s involvement in supporting disaster-impacted areas. He conveyed optimism that the presence of KKN students could provide new insights and renewed hope for the community, particularly as it seeks to overcome the aftermath of recent service disruptions.
Comparison to Past Disasters
He contrasted the current situation with the 2004 tsunami, noting that while the previous disaster lasted only a day without access to food, the ongoing crisis has led to weeks of difficulty in obtaining basic necessities. The disaster has notably impacted 18 out of 23 regencies and cities in Aceh, with Pidie Jaya being among the hardest hit areas.
University’s Community Service Initiatives
Dr. Sujito clarified that the deployment of 30 UGM KKN students to assist with recovery activities is part of the university’s broader community service initiatives. The students, under the guidance of faculty members, will aim to align their efforts with existing recovery programs established by UGM task forces.
Training and Support Provided
The KKN team has received training in several areas, including the construction of temporary shelters, enhancement of sanitation, and provision of psychosocial support. Dr. Sujito emphasized the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders to ensure effective recovery efforts following the disaster.
Current Recovery Situation
The situation remains dire, with over 91,000 individuals from approximately 24,280 households still located in evacuation shelters, indicating that the path to recovery in Aceh will be long and challenging. The involvement of KKN students is anticipated to be instrumental in supporting local communities during this recovery process.
