Institute for Humanities and AI Research Selected for Humanities Korea 3.0 Support Project at Chung-Ang University

The Institute for Humanities and AI Research at Chung-Ang University has been selected as a research team for the ‘Humanities Korea (HK) 3.0 Support Project,’ which is funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, an entity under the Ministry of Education.
Overview of the Initiative
This initiative represents the third phase of prior programs, including Humanities Korea (HK) and Humanities Korea Plus (HK+), and is recognized as a significant group research project aimed at advancing the field of humanities in Korea. The project focuses on enhancing research infrastructure by fostering university-based humanities research institutes, generating high-quality research outputs, and developing future scholars.
Support Models
The program includes two models of support: the Consortium type, which offers funding of up to 2 billion KRW per year, and the Hub type, which can receive up to 800 million KRW annually, with both support structures extending over a period of six years.
Innovative Academic Focus
The Institute has pioneered an innovative academic field termed ‘AI Humanities,’ establishing its role as a leader in addressing challenges related to artificial intelligence. Under the HK 3.0 initiative, the Institute has been awarded Consortium-type funding of 12 billion KRW over six years, emphasizing the theme ‘AI-Native Era: Implementing and Expanding AI Humanities to Address Human and Social Issues.’
Project Objectives
The objectives of this research project include analyzing various societal challenges expected in the AI-native era and exploring potential solutions. The initiative aims to propose institutions and policies that utilize technology to enhance human values, prepare professionals to implement these strategies, and ultimately foster a human-centered technological society. This project is considered a timely and essential research effort to prepare for the upcoming AI-native era through a humanities perspective.
Leadership Perspective
Lee Chan-gyu, Executive Vice President for Administration and Director of the Institute for Humanities and AI Research, highlighted the ambition to establish AI Humanities as a significant academic discipline to address the rapid changes in the future. The research results from the HK 3.0 project are expected to evaluate the impact of AI technologies on individuals and society while providing strategic recommendations. Furthermore, the Institute aims to expand its research infrastructure and cultivate talent to emerge as a global hub for AI Humanities research.
Previous Achievements
Since 2017, the Institute for Humanities and AI Research has secured a total of 11.4 billion KRW in funding through the HK+ project. The consortium research team for the current project includes several recognized institutions, such as the Institute for Data Science at Seoul National University, the Institute for Convergent Science, Technology, and Society at Jeju National University, the Center for Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences at KAIST, and the Research Institute for the Visual Language of Korea at Myongji University.
