UNAIR Strengthens International Collaboration with Dutch Ambassador’s Visit
Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) hosted H. E. Marc Gerritsen, the Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor Leste, and ASEAN, on January 16, 2025. The visit, which took place at the Majapahit Room in the ASEEC Building on UNAIR’s Dharmawangsa-B Campus, aimed to strengthen international academic partnerships and enhance collaboration. This event was organized by Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE).
Emphasis on Scholarships and Dutch-Indonesian Ties
During the visit, Ambassador Gerritsen emphasized the importance of scholarships for studying abroad, particularly in the Netherlands, which is noted for its high-quality and inclusive education system. He referred to Indonesia’s historical connections with the Netherlands and acknowledged that Indonesian culture plays a significant role in Dutch identity. The ambassador also expressed the Netherlands’ willingness to welcome Indonesian migrants.
Potential for Research Collaboration
Additionally, the ambassador addressed the potential advantages of research collaborations between UNAIR and Dutch institutions, highlighting the role such partnerships play in fostering innovation and advancing knowledge across various disciplines.
Focus on Education and Women’s Empowerment
A discussion session at UNAIR’s EU Centre shifted the focus to education and women’s empowerment. Gerritsen reiterated the Netherlands’ commitment to international cooperation, stating that education and opportunities for studying abroad serve as gateways to improved futures.
Support for Educational Quality Initiatives
He recognized Indonesia’s ongoing initiatives to enhance educational quality, despite facing challenges, and expressed the Netherlands’ readiness to support these initiatives through collaboration with the Indonesian government, including the Ministry of Education.
Addressing Gender Equality Challenges
The topic of gender equality was also addressed, with the Netherlands ranking third globally in this regard. Gerritsen highlighted existing challenges in achieving gender balance in society and noted that initiatives such as positive discrimination have been implemented to prioritize women’s recruitment and increase their participation in the workforce.
