Enhancing Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) Supply Chain in the Greater Bay Area for Hong Kong Development: Insights and Policy Roadmap
The Strategic Public Policy Forum on Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) took place on November 14, 2024. Hosted by the Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development (CICID) and the MiC Laboratory (MiCLab) from the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), the event was supported by funding from the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit through the Strategic Public Policy Research (SPPR) Funding Scheme.
Launch of the MiC Booklet
Key to the Forum was the launch of a booklet titled “Modular Integrated Construction Supply Chain in the Greater Bay Area for Hong Kong Development: Supply-Demand Analysis and Policy Roadmap.” The event attracted over 280 participants, including speakers from government, industry, and academia, who shared insights into recent developments in MiC supply chain policies and practices.
Opening Remarks
During the opening remarks, Professor SC Wong, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at HKU, acknowledged the significant advancements in MiC in Hong Kong since 2017. He underscored the Forum’s role in fostering understanding and connections vital to the sector’s future growth.
Foreword by Ir Ricky Lau
Ir Ricky Lau, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) at the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government’s Development Bureau, wrote the Foreword for the booklet. In his comments, Lau highlighted the government’s commitment to implementing MiC in public projects and recognized the CICID’s contributions to MiC’s progression in the region.
Presentation of Key Findings
Professor Wei Pan, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at HKU and Executive Director of CICID, presented the booklet and outlined key findings from the research project, including a comprehensive analysis of MiC supply and demand, along with a proposed policy roadmap.
Panel Discussions
The Forum included two panel discussions that examined developments in MiC within both the private and public sectors. Led by industry experts, these discussions addressed various challenges and opportunities related to MiC implementation.
Closing Remarks
Closing remarks were given by Professor Mak Chai-kwong, Vice Chairman of CICID, who stressed the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in strengthening the MiC supply chain.
Research Initiative and Objectives
This Forum was part of a larger research initiative supported by the SPPR Funding Scheme, aimed at enhancing the MiC supply chain in the GBA.
The Role of CICID and MiCLab
The CICID focuses on advancing construction and infrastructure through innovative research and development initiatives. The MiCLab was specifically established to promote systematic research in MiC in partnership with governmental and industrial stakeholders.
