‘Thammasat Chorus’ Wins a World-class Reputation of ‘2 Gold Medals’ in International Choral Competitions

The Thammasat University Chorus (TU Chorus) was awarded two gold medals at the International Choir Competition Phnom Penh 2024 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The choir won awards in two categories which are Golden Diploma Level 1 in the Folklore category and Golden Diploma Level 2 in the Mixed Choir category.

The International Choir Competition Phnom Penh 2024 is an international choir competition organized by Interkultur, the organizer of the World Choir Games. In this competition, the TU Chorus competed in the Folklore (Category F) and Mixed Choir (Category B1) categories.

An interview with student representatives Praepilai Pittayawipas, President of the Thammasat University Chorus, and Nonwarit Rungariyathanaphong, Conductor of the Thammasat University Chorus.

Nonwarit: For this competition, we had less preparation time than the last one in Vietnam. However, what went better than the previous competition was that we had more experienced singers and new members who were dedicated to practicing until they caught up with the other members. By practicing, we then could achieve this level of success in the competition.

Praepilai: The difficulty of preparing for this competition was the limited practice time as the competition date approached. Since most of the choir members are students, we had to allocate time for practice every Friday evening and Saturday for 3 hours per day. Sometimes, there were urgent rehearsals called on weekdays. Some weeks, practice had to be canceled due to midterm and final exams. If we count the days of practice compared to the time we had to perform on stage for this competition, the TU Chorus had very few practice hours. However, the important things that led to this victory were the passion of all members who enjoy singing together and the unity of all members, which is considered a part of our success. For those who are looking to join a club or association and have a passion for singing and are open to a variety of songs, the TU Chorus might be the answer. The club welcomes everyone into our family. In the upcoming academic year, the TU Chorus will hold auditions for new members.
