US, Japan universities and tech giants Amazon, Nvidia partner on privacy-respecting AI

TSUKUBA, Ibaraki — The University of Tsukuba recently announced an artificial intelligence (AI) research partnership with the University of Washington in the U.S., joined by American tech giants Amazon.com Inc. and Nvidia Corp.

AI training processes require large amounts of data which can include personal information. The partnership aims to develop AI that protects privacy. Additional aims under consideration include the development of AI focused on topics such as Japan’s aging and shrinking population, global warming and sports.

University of Tsukuba President Kyosuke Nagata signed on to the deal at the U.S. Department of Commerce on April 9, coinciding with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to the U.S. capital. The partnership aims to cooperate on research, human resource development and the practical application of research results.
