CityUHK Delegation Explores Kazakhstan’s Fusion of Technology and Silk Road Heritage

A high-level delegation from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), led by Council Chairman Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai, recently visited Kazakhstan to strengthen academic cooperation and explore the country’s evolving landscape of innovation and cultural heritage.
During the visit, CityUHK signed memoranda of understanding with local partners, reinforcing collaboration in education, research, and institutional development. Beyond formal engagements, the delegation experienced how Kazakhstan blends tradition with rapid modernisation.
In Astana, members of the delegation encountered a spontaneous cultural performance aboard the city’s newly launched light rail system, where young musicians in traditional attire played the dombra. The unexpected performance highlighted the continued presence of nomadic heritage within a modern urban environment.
Professor Ngai described the experience as a vivid representation of Central Asia’s identity, where historical traditions coexist with technological advancement and forward-looking development.
The delegation also visited key innovation landmarks, including the Future Energy Museum, which showcases Kazakhstan’s transition toward sustainable energy systems, and the International Center for Artificial Intelligence, where they explored the country’s growing digital ecosystem.
The visit deepened institutional ties and provided insight into Kazakhstan’s ambition to integrate cultural heritage with technological progress. It also reinforced CityUHK’s commitment to global engagement and fostering international collaboration that bridges tradition and innovation.
