Asian University Leaders Explore Academia–Industry Collaboration for Future Workforce Development

The plenary session of the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) Presidents Forum 2026, held at Nazarbayev University on June 1–2, focused on how universities can strengthen collaboration with industry to better prepare graduates for a rapidly evolving job market.
Academic leaders from across Asia discussed innovative approaches to university–industry engagement, highlighting the need to balance practical skills development with core academic values. The session was moderated by Dr. Omar Albastaki of the United Arab Emirates University.
Prof. Bin Yang of Tsinghua University presented an engineering doctorate model designed around solving real industrial challenges, where participants are assessed based on practical innovation outcomes rather than traditional dissertations. He emphasized early industry involvement in talent development as a key success factor.
Prof. Rehan Sadiq of Nazarbayev University highlighted diverse collaboration models, including joint research and innovation ecosystems linking universities, industry, and government. Other speakers from Seoul National University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology stressed transdisciplinary education, leadership development, and preserving academic independence.
The forum concluded that Asian universities are increasingly developing their own higher education models, reflecting regional needs and global challenges in shaping future-ready professionals.
