DU–FIO China Meeting Held to Strengthen Ocean Research Collaboration in Bangladesh

A meeting between Dhaka University (DU) and the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources was held on June 02, 2026 at the DU Vice-Chancellor’s meeting room to enhance collaboration in ocean research and marine science in Bangladesh. The meeting was chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam.
Senior representatives from both sides participated, including DU Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam, Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof. Dr. Humayun Kabir, and Director of the International Centre for Ocean Governance Dr. K. M. Azam Chowdhury. The Chinese delegation included Deputy Director General Mr. Antao Wang, Senior Scientist Prof. Dr. Fangli Qiao, and other leading researchers from FIO.
Discussions focused on strengthening academic and research collaboration and the potential signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between relevant ministries of Bangladesh and China. The proposed cooperation includes implementation of a CIDCA-supported project aimed at developing early warning and prediction systems for marine disasters in Bangladesh.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam emphasized expanding joint research initiatives and creating new opportunities for students and researchers, highlighting the importance of long-term scientific collaboration in ocean studies.
