Students from 54 Universities Participate in ITMO International Mathematics Competition

A total of 463 students from seven countries participated in the North Countries Universities Mathematical Competition (NCUMC), an international mathematics contest organized by ITMO University since 2014. The 2026 edition was conducted simultaneously across 22 universities spanning cities from Novosibirsk to Samarkand, highlighting the competition’s expanding global reach.

Originally launched for Northern European countries and Russia, NCUMC has evolved into an open international competition accessible to students from any country or university. The contest is hosted both at ITMO and partner “mirror” universities, which supervise and administer the exam locally to ensure broad participation without requiring travel to St. Petersburg.

In 2026, more than 500 students applied, with participants representing institutions across Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Belarus, and other countries. Alongside ITMO in St. Petersburg, partner universities such as Lomonosov Moscow State University, HSE University, Tomsk State University, and Samarkand State Pedagogical Institute supported the competition.

Although primarily an individual contest, universities may form teams of three students for a separate ranking category based on combined scores. This year, 81 students were recognized as winners and prize recipients, earning diplomas that can support scholarship applications and admissions to advanced programs.

NCUMC continues to grow as a platform for mathematical excellence, with preparations encouraged through university math clubs and past competition archives.
