Ambassador Talks Series Explores the Theory and Real-World Practice of Modern Turkish Diplomacy

American University of Central Asia continued its Ambassador Talks Series by hosting H.E. Mekin Mustafa Kemal Ökem for a thought-provoking discussion on the theory and practice of Turkish diplomacy. The session, introduced by President O’Connor on April 22, explored Türkiye’s evolving role in global politics through both historical and contemporary perspectives.
During the lecture, Ambassador Ökem reflected on the subjective nature of social theory and its influence on understanding diplomacy, international relations, and state behavior. Drawing from long-wave theories and historical frameworks, he traced Türkiye’s political transformation from early Turkic civilizations and the Ottoman Empire to the establishment of the modern Republic of Türkiye in 1923 and its current position as a significant regional power.
A major focus of the discussion centered on relations between Türkiye and Kyrgyzstan. The Ambassador highlighted centuries of historical interaction through trade, migration, and cultural exchange, while emphasizing Türkiye’s role as the first country to recognize Kyrgyzstan’s independence in 1991.
The event concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session covering migration policies, bilateral relations, and the role of education in strengthening international partnerships. The Ambassador Talks Series continues to provide students with valuable global diplomatic insights and cross-cultural dialogue opportunities.
