UNAIR FISIP Students Showcase Innovative Fact-Checking Project at Vietnam Conference
Students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) recently participated in the Asian Network of News & Information Educators (ANNIE) Lab School Net Conference 2024 held on December 13-14, 2024, at Van Lang University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The UNAIR delegation included students Nur Fajri Musyafa’ah Hanim and Kamilah Sa’diyah, accompanied by FISIP lecturer Irfan Wahyudi and facilitator Nimas Safira Widhiasti Wibowo.
During the conference, the UNAIR representatives presented their social innovation project, a fact-checking platform developed in collaboration with ANNIE Lab, an organization affiliated with Hong Kong University and the event organizer.
Overview of the Fact Meter Platform
The Fact Meter platform aims to verify the accuracy of news and identify potential hoaxes, primarily utilizing Instagram to promote public awareness and critical thinking to counter misinformation. The project development spanned approximately six months, beginning in May 2024, with its initial introduction at UNAIR in December of the previous year. The team was responsible for refining and relaunching the platform.
At the conference, the UNAIR team detailed their development process and gained insights from various international initiatives, including a project from Japan that employed location detection technology for validating news stories.
The Fact Meter project is expected to expand over the next two years, with the insights acquired during the conference likely to play a vital role in its future development. The participation in the conference provided valuable information on integrating advanced technologies into the platform, which could enhance the quality of the Fact Meter in subsequent versions.
