Dr. Xu Zhongyu, the Deputy Director of the China National Archives of Publications and Culture, welcomed the visiting scholars and presented the founding vision and cultural mission of the Archives.
Exhibitions and Insights
Participants engaged with several exhibitions, including “Chinese Ancient Civilization Through Cultural Artifacts” and “Techniques of Reproduction and Conservation.” These displays showcased ancient publications, manuscripts, and artifacts that illustrate China’s political, economic, philosophical, literary, scientific, and artistic contributions throughout history. The exhibitions provided insights into the development of book forms and traditional production techniques, which were described by Professor Yitwah Cheung from the Department of Mathematical Sciences as enlightening.
Interactive Cultural Session
An interactive cultural session allowed scholars to engage in activities related to ancient book restoration, woodblock printing, and Chinese calligraphy. During this session, Professor Sinkinesh Atale Gebre from Beijing Foreign Studies University noted similarities between the Chinese character “中” (zhōng) and a letter in her Ethiopian script, highlighting connections between different cultures. Participants reported that the event deepened their understanding of Chinese civilization and provided valuable insights.
