UNAIR Student Presents Research on Teacher Professional Identity at International Conference
A master’s student in linguistics at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Restu Santyarini, presented her research on the professional identity of teachers at an international conference hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS) from December 5 to December 7, 2024. The research focused on factors influencing the professional identity of teachers, with particular emphasis on the Indonesian context.
Research Overview
The paper, titled “An Ecological Perspective Case Study: The Role of Emotion in the Identity Construction of Young Learner English Language Teachers,” addressed important issues pertinent to Indonesia’s educational landscape. Santyarini underscored the necessity of enhancing the professional identity of teachers, particularly those educators who instruct young learners and often experience perceptions of inferiority compared to their counterparts at higher educational levels.
Significance of the Conference
This conference marked Santyarini’s first international presentation, where she represented her research on a prominent platform. She articulated the significance of advocating for the professionalism and identity of teachers within Indonesia.
Engagement with International Attendees
Despite her initial concerns regarding the relevance of her topic, Santyarini effectively engaged with conference attendees from 42 countries. During the event, she expressed a particular interest in collaborating with Professor Sarah Mercer, one of the keynote speakers, who invited her to submit a paper for potential joint research.
Encouragement for Peers
In her closing remarks, Santyarini encouraged her peers to remain cognizant of the challenges surrounding the teaching profession, recognizing the value of contributing to broader discussions.
