A new coronavirus wave across Southeast Asia, particularly affecting Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand – countries that did not suffer badly from the first waves in 2020 and earlier this year – has prevented the re-opening of universities and disrupted higher education for the second year running.
With some students now in their second year of online-only courses, many are calling for tuition fee rebates, as well as financial assistance, as the latest waves have badly hit the economies in these countries at the same time that they are battling to get people vaccinated, but others are simply demanding more clarity over the return to normal lessons.
