Iran Strengthens Global Academic Engagement with Ambitious International Student Target

The University of Tehran, in partnership with Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), recently hosted the two-day national conference, “New Horizons in International Scientific Activities of Universities, Institutions, and Educational, Research, and Technology Centers of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” The event brought together senior officials from government ministries, parliament, universities, and research institutions to explore strategies for strengthening Iran’s international scientific presence.

University of Tehran President Dr. Mohammad Hossein Omid highlighted the need to remove regulatory and financial barriers that limit international collaboration and student recruitment. He emphasized that achieving Iran’s target of hosting 320,000 international students will require stronger policy support and streamlined administrative processes.

Speakers throughout the conference underscored the importance of scientific diplomacy, technology transfer, and international partnerships in enhancing Iran’s global academic standing. Dr. Seyed Mehdi Abtahi of the Ministry of Science called for a more proactive approach to international engagement, while TUMS President Dr. Seyed Reza Raeis Karami described internationalization as a strategic necessity for scientific growth and global influence.

Participants also discussed strengthening collaboration with the Iranian diaspora, expanding educational opportunities abroad, and promoting research partnerships. The conference concluded with a shared commitment to advancing scientific cooperation, attracting international talent, and positioning Iran as a more active contributor to the global knowledge ecosystem.
