Radio Wave Modeling by ITS Professor Boosts Telecommunications Research

A professor from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has highlighted the importance of radio wave modelling in advancing telecommunications across Indonesia. During a scientific lecture titled Radio Wave Modelling for Various Telecommunications Applications, he presented research aimed at improving communication reliability while reducing implementation costs.

One of the key studies focuses on modelling tropical rain attenuation at the 28 GHz frequency using the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) statistical model. The research demonstrates how accurate prediction of rain effects can support the deployment of more stable and weather-resilient 5G networks in urban environments.

The professor also showcased innovations in emergency communications using High Frequency (HF) radio systems operating in the 3–30 MHz band. By applying Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) propagation and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology, the system enables long-distance communication without relying on satellites, making it particularly valuable during disasters and in remote regions.

Beyond telecommunications, the research extends to healthcare through Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) technology for smart hospitals. By analysing factors such as patient posture, sensor placement, and room conditions, the study improves the reliability of wireless patient monitoring systems. Collectively, these projects contribute to stronger communication infrastructure, support technological innovation, and align with Sustainable Development Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
