Professor Yasuto Tachikawa Selected as Kyoto University’s Next President

Kyoto University has announced the selection of Professor Yasuto Tachikawa as its next president following a decision by the university’s President Selection Committee. The committee, chaired by Dr. Toshio Hirano, Professor Emeritus and former President of Kyoto University, selected Professor Tachikawa to lead one of Japan’s most prestigious institutions.
Professor Tachikawa currently serves as Vice-President for Long-Term Development and Planning and has previously held key leadership positions within the university, including Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering. His extensive experience in academic administration and strategic planning has positioned him as a prominent figure in the university’s ongoing development efforts.
As the incoming president, Professor Tachikawa is expected to guide Kyoto University through a period of continued growth, innovation, and international engagement. His leadership will play an important role in advancing the university’s mission of excellence in education, research, and societal contribution while strengthening its global reputation.
Professor Tachikawa’s appointment reflects the confidence placed in his vision and leadership capabilities by the university community. He will officially assume office on 1 October 2026 and serve a six-year term.
