Wits University Graduation Season 2026: Celebrate 5,565 Graduands and Honorary Doctorate Award

Wits University has announced its autumn graduation season for 2026, set to take place from 18 to 27 March. During this period, a total of 5,565 graduates will receive their degrees. On 27 March, the university will confer an honorary doctorate in Science in Engineering to alumnus Sir John Wilfred Lazar.
Graduation Ceremonies Schedule
The graduation ceremonies will include several faculties, starting with the Faculty of Science, which will host 1,057 graduands. This will be followed by the Faculty of Commerce, Law, and Management with 2,019 graduates, the Faculty of Humanities with 1,306 graduates, and concluding with the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment featuring 1,183 graduates.

Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits University, noted that graduation represents a significant achievement, reflecting the perseverance and resilience of the graduates. He emphasized that the event celebrates both the graduates and the contributions of Sir John Lazar, who is recognized for his leadership and innovation in engineering and technology.
About Sir John Lazar
Sir John Lazar is a prominent technology leader and entrepreneur, noted for his pivotal role in the transformation of Data Connection Ltd, which became a significant player in global telecommunications before its acquisition by Microsoft. Lazar, a Wits alumnus, remains actively engaged with the university, providing mentorship and support to emerging startups across Africa. His contributions to the field have earned him notable appointments, including President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, as well as a knighthood in 2025.
Coordination of Graduation Ceremonies
The Exams and Graduations Office at Wits University will oversee the coordination of the graduation ceremonies, which will comprise 20 individual events throughout the season. The Faculty of Health Sciences will hold its graduation ceremonies later in the year, during the July and December sessions.
