First Gender-Transformative Digital Education Training in Ghana: Empowering Gender Equality in ICT

The first Gender-Transformative Digital Education Training in Ghana occurred from January 6 to 9, 2026. This initiative is part of the Beijing Normal University-UNESCO Project for Digital Skills for Girls in Africa, launched in October 2024. The project aims to enhance gender awareness among information and communications technology (ICT) teacher trainers and pre-service teachers, with the goal of fostering an inclusive environment in ICT classrooms and promoting gender equality in digital education.
Collaboration and Participation
Organized in collaboration with the UNESCO International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (UNESCO INRULED), the China-Africa Teacher Education Center, UNESCO Headquarters, the UNESCO Office in Accra, and the Ghana Ministry of Education, the program included 29 teacher trainers from various regions of Ghana.
Gender-Transformative Approach
The training employs a gender-transformative approach to digital education, focusing not only on improving access to technology but also on transforming gender norms and power dynamics that limit girls’ participation. It equips educators with the tools to implement inclusive teaching methods, challenge stereotypes, and create safe and engaging learning environments.
Empowering Educators
Participants learn to identify biases, incorporate gender perspectives into lesson planning, and promote equal participation in the classroom. Graduates of the training are expected to implement similar programs for pre-service teachers in their institutions later in the year.
Future Expansion
Participants have indicated strong support for the initiative and have suggested expanding it nationwide to benefit additional teacher training institutions, thereby contributing to advancements in gender equality and digital transformation in education.
