NUS Law’s Farewell to Bukit Timah: Celebrating Memories and Milestones Before the Move to Kent Ridge
On November 15, 2025, approximately 480 members of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Law community gathered at the Bukit Timah Campus to commemorate their time at the institution prior to its relocation to the Kent Ridge Campus in January 2026. The event provided an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, alumni, and their families to reflect on the memories formed at a campus located within Singapore’s Botanic Gardens.
Significance of the Bukit Timah Campus
The Bukit Timah Campus has played a significant role in the history of NUS Law. It served as the site for the admission of the first cohort of law students to the then-University of Malaya in 1957, a precursor to NUS. After spending 25 years at Kent Ridge, the Faculty returned to Bukit Timah in July 2006, following the reacquisition of the property by NUS.
Farewell Event Activities
The farewell event included a variety of activities that showcased the campus’s history and shared experiences. Notably, Adjunct Professor Kevin Tan led a heritage tour, recounting stories about key buildings such as the Manasseh Meyer Building and the C J Koh Law Library. Additional activities included carnival games, musical performances by alumni, and interactive booths designed to foster community engagement.
Dean’s Address
During the event, Professor Andrew Simester, Dean of NUS Law, addressed the significance of the transition, emphasizing the transformative experiences associated with the Bukit Timah Campus. He highlighted the forthcoming move to Kent Ridge as a means to facilitate greater interdisciplinary collaboration within the broader university community.
Reflections from Alumni
Alumni took the opportunity to share personal reflections on their time at Bukit Timah, acknowledging how their experiences at the campus contributed to the development of lasting friendships and professional connections. The campus has been viewed not only as a physical space but also as an important setting for numerous significant experiences.
Ongoing Legacy
The farewell celebration symbolizes not only a change in location but also the ongoing legacy of community and collaboration within the NUS Law community, as members anticipate new opportunities at Kent Ridge.
