Exploring Business and Innovation: XMUM MBA Students’ Study Trip to Shenzhen and Hong Kong

From August 4 to 9, 2025, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) conducted its annual China Study Trip to Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This event featured 35 participants, including MBA students, alumni, faculty, and staff, with the objective of examining the business and innovation environments within the Greater Bay Area (GBA), recognized for its economic and technological importance.

Shenzhen Exploration

During the Shenzhen segment of the trip, participants explored the city’s role in driving innovation and economic development. The group visited the Qianhai Exhibition Hall, where they were informed about Shenzhen’s urban planning strategies and policies that promote cross-border collaboration. Additional visits included TusStar Shenzhen and the Qianhai Shengang Dream Workshop, where insights on fostering start-ups and attracting talent were shared. Discussions at the Institute for International Affairs Qianhai highlighted the impact of academic research on governance and business strategies.

Visit to BYD Headquarters

A notable aspect of the Shenzhen itinerary included a visit to BYD Headquarters, where attendees observed the company’s transformation from a battery manufacturer to a prominent player in the electric vehicle sector. Participants also witnessed a demonstration of BYD’s blade battery safety test, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in technology.

Hong Kong Segment

The delegation then traveled to Hong Kong, where conversations focused on global business and finance. At Maybank Hong Kong, participants took part in a networking session with the CEO and departmental leaders, addressing topics such as artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border financing, and sustainability initiatives.

Cultural Experiences

Cultural experiences were integrated into the trip, highlighted by a visit to the ASEAN Film Festival at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. The festival featured the Malaysian film “Gold,” which tells the story of Paralympic champion Cheah Liek Hou and prompted discussions about themes of leadership, resilience, and determination.

Logistics and Hospitality Collaboration

The group also visited the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel and collaborated with Kerry Logistics to examine the ongoing evolution of the logistics and hospitality sectors through customer-centered innovation. The trip concluded with an academic exchange at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where participants had the chance to learn about the MBA program, tour the University Gallery, and take part in peer-to-peer learning activities.
