ETSA Enhances English Skills for Future Learners Through University Social Responsibility Outreach

The Faculty of Education at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) recently initiated a University Social Responsibility (USR) outreach program titled “Unlocking English Beyond the Classroom (UEBTC).” This initiative was led by the Ethos! TESL Student Association (ETSA) in collaboration with SMK Datuk Mansor in Bahau, Negeri Sembilan.
Event Overview
Held on 20 June 2025 at the Seminar Room of UiTM Puncak Alam, the program engaged 80 high-achieving secondary school students alongside 20 student facilitators from ETSA. The event aimed to enhance the participants’ English language skills while fostering connections between UiTM and public schools.
Interactive Learning Activities
Participants engaged in a range of interactive modules and drama-based activities, which were part of ETSA’s “Maverick Training Module.” These activities focused on promoting the practical use of English and improving communication skills beyond conventional educational methods. The sessions also provided UiTM students with opportunities to apply their Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) pedagogical skills in practical settings, contributing to their leadership and instructional development.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
The opening ceremony featured remarks from key figures including Dr. Roslaili Anuar, Deputy Dean (Academic); Dr. Jamiah Baba, Head of the Study Centre for Arts and Language; and Ms. Munirah Mohd Izam, ETSA Advisor. Mr. Mohd Zafuan Mohd Som, Head of the English Panel from the collaborating school, highlighted the significance of UiTM’s involvement in facilitating the school’s first external academic visit for high-performing students.
Commitment to Educational Development
The UEBTC initiative is designed to emphasize UiTM’s commitment to educational development, social responsibility, and strengthening partnerships between educational institutions. It seeks to improve educational quality while positioning UiTM students as advocates for inclusive learning within the community.
Future Initiatives
In response to the positive feedback and active participation observed during the program, the Faculty of Education plans to broaden the scope of similar initiatives across Malaysia. This effort aims to further solidify UiTM’s role in social responsibility and equip graduates with the skills necessary to drive change through education.
