HKU 2024 Information Day: Showcasing Strengths in Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) conducted its Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2024 on October 26, attracting more than 75,000 visitors. The event included a range of activities such as admissions talks, program information sessions, facility tours, and experiential activities aimed at engaging prospective students.

Themes and Initiatives

This year, the theme for Information Day was “AI + Sustainability,” reflecting HKU’s commitment to the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainable development. The university highlighted its initiatives that address the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations. Faculty members participated in activities that demonstrated how HKU’s diverse programs equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to engage in AI applications and related sustainability initiatives.

Leadership Engagement

Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, interacted with attendees and reaffirmed the university’s focus on preparing students for a technology-driven future. He underscored the significance of AI-ready education across various disciplines, noting its importance in the current digital landscape.

Commitment to Innovation

Professor Zhang commented on the institution’s dedication to establishing a dynamic learning environment that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and innovation. He also announced the establishment of two new schools focused on data science and innovation, aiming to enhance the university’s educational offerings.

Event Highlights

The Information Day featured workshops, laboratory demonstrations, interactive kiosks, and guided tours organized by different faculties and student support services.

New Academic Offerings

HKU will introduce the School of Computing and Data Science and the School of Innovation, which will provide undergraduate programs designed to combine technical proficiency with practical learning experiences for future career opportunities in AI and data science.

Additionally, starting in 2025, HKU plans to launch several new programs within its Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Engineering. The Faculty of Arts will introduce programs such as the “Bachelor of Arts in Global Creative Industries” and a dual degree in “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.” The Faculty of Engineering is set to expand its offerings with six new programs, including specialized engineering tracks that incorporate AI technologies.
