Vietnamese Universities Called to Become “National Knowledge Hub” in New Development Era

At the 120th anniversary celebration of Vietnam National University, Party General Secretary Tô Lâm outlined new expectations for higher education, emphasizing that universities must evolve into centers of knowledge creation, technological innovation, and national competitiveness.

Experts noted that Vietnam is transitioning from a labor- and capital-driven economy toward one based on productivity, science, and innovation. This shift is redefining the role of universities, from traditional training institutions to strategic contributors in national development and policy formation.

Scholars highlighted the growing importance of fields such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and data science, where universities are expected to work closely with industry and government. Academic leaders stressed that modern universities should function as think tanks, generating research, policy input, and solutions for real-world challenges.

The discussion also emphasized the need to bridge the gap between research and commercialization. Universities are increasingly promoting startups, innovation hubs, and technology transfer to ensure that scientific outcomes move beyond laboratories into the market.

General Secretary Tô Lâm also underscored that higher education must contribute to national soft power and global integration, as Vietnamese universities shift toward international standards and stronger global research participation.
