Enhancing Education with GenAI: The ScholAIstic Approach

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is transforming teaching and learning through ScholAIstic, an innovative Generative AI (GenAI) platform developed by the NUS AI Centre for Educational Technologies (AICET). Designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world practice, the platform uses simulation-based learning, Socratic questioning, and AI-powered role-playing to help students build critical thinking and professional skills.

ScholAIstic was first introduced through a collaboration between AICET and the NUS Department of Social Work. The platform enables students to engage with AI-driven client simulations that replicate challenging social work scenarios, including emotional and non-verbal responses. Students receive real-time feedback on communication techniques and counselling skills, helping them build confidence before interacting with real clients. Encouraged by positive results, NUS is now expanding the project in partnership with its schools of medicine, nursing, and information technology, with plans to introduce speech-enabled and visual AI avatars.

The platform has also been successfully adopted in dental education. In the Faculty of Dentistry, ScholAIstic assists students in analysing dental X-rays through guided case-based exercises. The chatbot provides structured feedback and supports independent learning before classroom discussions.

Recognising its impact on education, the AICET team recently received the OpenGov Asia Recognition of Excellence Award 2026, highlighting NUS’s leadership in applying AI to create engaging, practical, and future-ready learning experiences.
