Southern Cross University Welcomes 5,000 Students and Launches In-Demand Courses for 2026

Southern Cross University has reported the enrollment of over 5,000 new students for the 2026 academic year, coinciding with the start of Orientation Week. In response to increasing demand for career-oriented education, the university has launched several new programs.

New Programs for 2026

Among the new offerings are the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Honours) at the Northern Rivers campus and the Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the Gold Coast campus, both set to begin in Term 1 with full cohorts. Other new programs for 2026 include various online graduate certificates, the Master of Engineering, Master of Management, Professional Certificate in Health, and an updated Bachelor of Business.

Commitment to Workforce Needs

Brendon Nelson, Vice-President (Students) and Registrar, noted the positive reception of these courses and highlighted the university’s commitment to aligning educational programs with regional workforce needs. The number of scholarship recipients for 2026 has increased significantly, with 378 students receiving financial assistance through scholarships.

Popular Courses Among Domestic Students

Among domestic students, popular courses this year include the Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, and Diploma of Health. The university’s Preparing for Success Program, a complimentary pathway course, has also gained traction, reflecting a demand for diverse educational pathways.

International Students’ Preferred Programs

For international students, the preferred programs include the Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry), Master of Teaching, and Bachelor of Information Technology.

Orientation Week Activities

Orientation Week activities are being organized across the Coffs Harbour, Lismore, and Gold Coast campuses, with an online program available for remote learners. Planned events include food, live music, information stalls, and prize drawings aimed at facilitating student integration into university life.

Support for Students with Disabilities

Karly Murray, Student Success Coordinator, emphasized the role of Orientation Week in equipping students for academic achievement. The university is collaborating with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative during this period to provide resources for students with non-visible disabilities.

Welcome Parties and Excursions

In addition to campus celebrations, welcome parties are scheduled for the Coffs Harbour and Gold Coast campuses, and students will have the opportunity to participate in excursions to local attractions such as Dreamworld and the Big Banana.

Facilitating a Smooth Transition

Through these efforts, Southern Cross University intends to assist its new students in transitioning smoothly to university life and prepare them for their educational endeavors.
