Qiu Yong’s Visit to Russia: Advancing Educational and Technological Cooperation with Tsinghua University

During a recent state visit to Russia by President Xi Jinping, Qiu Yong, Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee, sought to foster enhanced cooperation in education, science, and technology between China and Russia. This visit coincided with the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and aimed to strengthen Tsinghua University’s partnerships with Russian institutions, thereby contributing to the broader strategic partnership between the two nations.

Cooperation Agreement Signed

On May 8, Qiu Yong participated in a ceremony at the Kremlin, attended by both President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin. During this event, he signed a cooperation agreement with Anatoly Torkunov, Rector of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University), and Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).

Focus of the Agreement

The signed agreement emphasizes the establishment of joint degree programs, collaborative research endeavors, faculty and student exchanges, and talent training initiatives. This collaborative effort aims to accelerate the development of high-level professionals necessary to address shared strategic priorities between the two countries in areas such as science and technology, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and the digital economy.

Visit to Mendeleev University

The following day, Qiu Yong visited Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology, where he met with Rector Evgeny Vladimirovich Rumyantsev and representatives of the Chinese student body at the university. Both institutions previously agreed to a memorandum of understanding regarding their collaboration. Qiu highlighted the importance of international exchange and cooperation, expressing hope that this partnership would yield positive outcomes for China-Russia relations.

Discussions with Business Leaders

In addition, Qiu Yong engaged in discussions with Herman Gref, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Sber. Their discussions focused on potential collaborations in innovation, particularly in the realms of artificial intelligence and digital finance. This meeting culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding intended to enhance cooperation between the academic and business sectors in both countries.

Collaboration with Higher School of Economics

On May 10, Qiu Yong visited the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University), where another cooperation agreement was exchanged with its Rector, Nikita Anisimov. He noted the increasing opportunities for joint efforts across various fields and conveyed Tsinghua University’s intention to broaden its collaboration with HSE University and other Russian institutions through multilateral platforms such as BRICS.

Connection with Alumni

Throughout the visit, Qiu Yong also connected with Tsinghua University alumni residing in Russia, thereby strengthening the ties between the university and its graduates abroad. Accompanying him during these activities were relevant faculty and department heads from Tsinghua University.
