Sarawak Sets Course for Drone Future with Aviation Safety at the Core

Sarawak is accelerating efforts to lead Malaysia’s emerging low-altitude economy, with a strong focus on aviation safety, talent development, and cross-sector collaboration highlighted at the Low Altitude Economy (LAE) Seminar 2026 in Miri.

Officiating the event, Lee Kim Shin emphasised the transformative potential of drone technology and autonomous systems, while stressing the need for robust governance and a strong safety culture to ensure sustainable growth. He highlighted the vital role of higher education institutions, including Curtin University Malaysia, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, i-CATS University College, and CENTEXS in developing industry-ready talent.

The seminar, jointly organised by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak, Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, and Curtin Malaysia, brought together over 300 participants from government, academia, and industry. Discussions focused on regulatory frameworks, technological advancements, and real-world applications of drones across sectors such as agriculture, logistics, and disaster response.

Through expert forums and technology showcases, the event underscored Sarawak’s ambition to build a safe, skilled, and innovation-driven drone ecosystem, positioning the state at the forefront of Malaysia’s aviation future.
