USIM Enhances International Collaboration: MJSL Delegation’s Strategic Visit to Istanbul

A delegation from the Malaysian Journal of Syariah and Law (MJSL) at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) recently undertook a strategic visit to Istanbul, Turkey, from September 11 to 18, 2025, aimed at enhancing academic collaborations with several prominent Turkish universities.
Delegation Composition
The group included three academics from the Faculty of Syariah and Law, who serve on the MJSL editorial board: Dr. Dina Imam Supaat, Associate Professor Dr. Hendun Abd Rahman Shah, and Associate Professor Dr. Noor Dzuhaidah Osman.
Participation in International Discourse
The visit began with participation in the International Discourse on Shariah and Law (Series 4/2025) at Istanbul University’s historic Beyazit Campus. The event, which was hosted by Professor Fethi, the Dean of the Law Faculty, featured discussions on various legal topics, including Malaysian and Turkish law, Islamic law, and international law. The sessions were facilitated by the MJSL delegation in collaboration with Dr. Abdullah Islamoglu from the law faculty.
Meetings with Editorial Teams
In the following days, the delegation met with editorial teams from various law journals, including the Istanbul Law Review (IUHFM), Journal of Penal Law and Criminology (JPLC), and the Journal of Administrative Law and Sciences (JALAS), among others. These interactions aimed to discuss editorial practices and opportunities for joint scholarly endeavors.
Collaboration with Darulfunun Ilahiyat Journal
Additionally, meetings were held with the team from the Darulfunun Ilahiyat Journal at the Ilahiyat Faculty of Istanbul University, led by Chief Editor Professor Necmettin Kizilkaya. These discussions provided insights into academic publishing and potential collaborative projects.
Concluding Discussions at Bogazici University
The visit concluded at the Law Faculty of Bogazici University, where discussions with faculty Dean Dr. Hassan Basri Bulbul and colleagues Dr. Muzaffer Eroglu and Dr. Ayse Didem Sezgin further advanced the goal of promoting collaborative research opportunities.
Objectives of the Initiative
The primary objective of the initiative was to elevate the Malaysian Journal of Syariah and Law’s profile within the international academic community, while exploring avenues for joint projects and enhancing USIM’s global academic presence. The delegation also emphasized postgraduate research programs at the master’s and Ph.D. levels and invited international scholars to serve as journal reviewers and thesis examiners, thereby facilitating academic mobility and expertise sharing.
Anticipated Outcomes
The outcome of the visit is anticipated to lay a foundation for ongoing collaborations that may lead to future research, knowledge exchange, and influential publications in the fields of law and syariah studies.
