Ewha Womans University Receives Significant Donation of Works by Renowned Artist Suki Seokyeong Kang

Ewha Womans University has announced a donation of approximately 400 artworks from the late contemporary artist and former professor Suki Seokyeong Kang, provided by her family. This collection consists of all artworks consigned to galleries, along with pieces previously donated to the Ewha Womans University Museum by Kang. The donation aims to preserve Kang’s legacy and support artistic education and research at the university.

About Suki Seokyeong Kang

Suki Seokyeong Kang, an alumna of Ewha’s Department of Korean Painting, pursued a Master of Arts in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London. She later returned to the university as a professor, gaining recognition for her contributions to Korea’s contemporary art scene through her innovative approaches. One of her notable works, “Grandmother Tower,” received the Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel in 2018, solidifying her influential role within the art community. Additionally, she was featured in the main exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2019, further establishing her international presence.

Artistic Contributions

Kang’s body of work spans various media, including painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance art. Her series such as Jeong (井), Mat, and Mora reflect a blend of traditional influences with contemporary themes.

Continued Influence and Legacy

Despite facing health challenges due to cancer, Kang continued to create impactful art, with exhibitions planned up until her passing in April 2025. Following her death, her family expressed the desire to donate her works to Ewha, with the intention of advancing scholarship and education in the arts at the university. A formal ceremony for the signing and handover occurred in June, attended by family members and university officials.

Future Initiatives at Ewha

Ewha Womans University intends to establish a committee tasked with overseeing the preservation and scholarly application of the donated artworks. This committee will also organize exhibitions and discussions aimed at highlighting Kang’s contributions to both society and the arts.

Presidential Acknowledgment

President Hyang-Sook Lee acknowledged Kang’s ability to integrate traditional elements with contemporary themes, noting that her artistic legacy will continue to inspire education and creativity at the university.
