University of Liverpool’s Delegation Visit to Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU)

A delegation from the University of Liverpool, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones, visited Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) on July 29, 2025. The delegation was welcomed by Zhang Liqun, President of XJTU and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, at the university’s iHarbour facility.

University Collaboration and Partnerships

During the meeting, Zhang emphasized the University of Liverpool’s reputation as a leader in higher education innovation and identified it as a reliable strategic partner for XJTU. The collaboration between the two institutions is highlighted through the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), recognized for its achievements in interdisciplinary education, talent development, and scientific research.

Commitment to Cooperation

In response to emerging challenges within the global higher education landscape, both universities expressed a commitment to enhancing cooperation in key areas, including artificial intelligence, low-carbon technology, and healthy aging. This collaboration is aimed at addressing significant global issues such as climate change and promoting sustainable development.

Significance of the Partnership

Jones remarked on the nearly two-decade partnership between the University of Liverpool and XJTU, identifying XJTLU as one of the most prominent Sino-foreign cooperative universities in the world. He underscored the necessity of scientific innovation and educational reforms to tackle global challenges such as technological advancements, an aging population, and climate change.

Future Directions and Agreements

The discussions encompassed various topics, including talent development, scientific research, and the future direction of XJTLU, resulting in substantial agreements for further collaboration. Both institutions conveyed confidence that their longstanding partnership serves as a robust foundation for future cooperation and plan to maintain close coordination to enhance and broaden their collaborative efforts.
