Courtesy Visit by Delegation from the University of the Philippines to the University of Tsukuba

On May 26, 2025, a delegation from the University of the Philippines (UP) system visited the University of Tsukuba. The visit included President Angelo Jimenez, Chancellor Jose Camacho Jr. from UP Los Baños, and Vice President for Academic Affairs Leo D.P. Cubillan. The meeting took place at the University of Tsukuba’s Tokyo Campus, where discussions centered on potential collaborations in research and education.
Exploring Areas of Expertise
During the visit, the delegation learned about the University of Tsukuba’s areas of expertise, particularly its work in risk resilience, nuclear fusion research at the Plasma Research Center, and developments in artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with various industries. The institutions expressed a mutual commitment to an educational philosophy that emphasizes problem-based learning. President Nagata also introduced the University of Tsukuba, Malaysia (UTMy) located in Kuala Lumpur, which operates as a fully owned institution offering Japanese degrees as an integral part of Tsukuba’s internationalization efforts.
Strengthening Academic Relationships
The discussions highlighted both universities’ interests in promoting collaboration, identifying specific research themes, and exploring opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, with the aim of strengthening their academic relationship.
