Asian Higher Education Leaders Meet to Address Emerging Challenges and Opportunities

University leaders from across Asia convened in Astana, Kazakhstan, for the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) Presidents Forum 2026 to discuss the future of higher education amid rapid technological advances, evolving workforce demands, and increasing societal expectations.

Hosted by Nazarbayev University, the forum brought together presidents, provosts, and senior representatives from leading institutions, including Tsinghua University, The University of Tokyo, Seoul National University, Chulalongkorn University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Vietnam National University, United Arab Emirates University, and others.

Originally planned for the United Arab Emirates, the summit was relocated to Astana due to regional instability, highlighting Kazakhstan’s growing role in global higher education and research.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Science and Higher Education, Sayasat Nurbek, emphasized the country’s commitment to building an AI-driven higher education ecosystem and strengthening international academic cooperation.

Held under the theme “Shaping Future Universities: Industry Engagement and Governance Innovation,” the forum explored new governance models, institutional agility, and stronger university-industry partnerships. Participants discussed strategies to enhance academic relevance, support innovation, and better prepare students for future careers.

The event also featured discussions on the alliance’s strategic development and financial sustainability, while the AUA presidency officially transitioned from United Arab Emirates University to Chulalongkorn University.
