In an effort to promote its status as a global education hub, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has participated in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s “Study in Hong Kong” Week by launching a series of educational activities. Among these initiatives is the co-hosting of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2026 Conference and Exhibition, in partnership with seven other University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities. The goal is to enhance Hong Kong’s international academic network and showcase the region’s higher education strengths.

APAIE Conference Overview

The theme of the APAIE conference was “Asia-Pacific Partnerships for the Global Good,” and the event took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The opening ceremony featured several prominent figures, including Dr. Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong SAR; Mr. Tim Lui, Chairman of the UGC; and Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU. The conference drew over 3,000 educational leaders from more than 70 countries, underscoring Hong Kong’s role in facilitating international educational exchange.

Presidents’ Dialogue

A significant element of the conference was the Presidents’ Dialogue, moderated by Prof. Jin-Guang Teng. This session allowed university leaders from various institutions to discuss strategies for adapting to the evolving challenges facing higher education and to explore partnerships that can yield mutual benefits. The dialogue served to strengthen Hong Kong’s leadership position in the global higher education landscape.

Support for International Students

Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) at PolyU, highlighted the university’s extensive support services for international students, which include fostering interactions among students from diverse backgrounds and facilitating their transition into the academic environment of Hong Kong. Discussions during the seminar focused on how to leverage Hong Kong’s advantages to attract top international students.

PolyU Partners Day

As part of “Study in Hong Kong” Week, PolyU also organized the PolyU Partners Day, which welcomed over 180 representatives from partner institutions in 37 countries. This event allowed the university to showcase its recent accomplishments, academic strengths, and internationalization strategies, along with campus tours and networking opportunities.

Cultural Celebrations

To celebrate cultural diversity, the PolyU Chinese Language Centre collaborated with the Confucius Institute of Hong Kong to organize activities marking the Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival. These activities included calligraphy and traditional costume exhibitions, providing international students with insights into Chinese culture and reinforcing Hong Kong’s status as an attractive study destination.

Future Plans for Global Recruitment

Looking ahead, PolyU plans to support the government’s initiative to promote the “Study in Hong Kong” brand by expanding its global recruitment efforts, especially in emerging markets such as Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and South America. The university intends to provide a range of scholarships and support to attract a diverse international student body. Additionally, plans are in place to enhance high-level academic exchanges and collaborations with prestigious institutions, including the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, to further solidify the appeal of the “Study in Hong Kong” initiative.
