Nagoya University News: Educational and Research Exchanges with Chinese Consulate

On July 4, 2025, Consul General Xian Yang of the People’s Republic of China in Nagoya visited Nagoya University to discuss educational and research collaborations. The consul general met with Nagoya University President Naoshi Sugiyama and Chancellor Seiichi Matsuo of the Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (THERS). Professor Hiroyuki Koyama, Executive Director of the Organization for Promotion of Glocalization at Gifu University, participated in the meeting through an online platform.

Visit to Higashiyama Campus

The visit included a tour of key facilities on the Higashiyama Campus, beginning with the Yu Dafu Memorial, which honors the 20th-century Chinese writer who attended a high school that later became part of Nagoya University. The itinerary also featured the newly opened Common Nexus (ComoNe), inaugurated on July 1, 2025. This facility aims to connect universities with the wider society by providing spaces for creative exhibitions, student-business exchanges, and educational programs intended to share academic knowledge with the public.

Upcoming Educational Exchanges

During the discussions, upcoming educational exchanges were addressed. A program scheduled for September 2025 will see students from Nagoya University and Gifu University travel to Yunnan Province, China. This six-day initiative is expected to foster interactions with Chinese university students and include visits to artificial intelligence companies, alongside cultural experiences highlighting local biodiversity and ethnic minority cultures.

Reinforcement of Academic Partnerships

The meeting reaffirmed the strong academic partnerships between the institutions and China, with both Nagoya University and Gifu University maintaining significant agreements with various Chinese institutions at both university and departmental levels. The Chinese Consulate expressed its support for student exchanges and academic collaboration that contribute to the educational development of both Japan and China.
